Uganda has held the 1st National Health Promotion Conference in Munyonyo under the theme, “Investing in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention to achieve universal health coverage”. Dr Diana Atwiine, the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary said health is everyone’s responsibility. We must ask what we have done for ourselves and the people around us to remain healthy?
“We need to focus on prevention. We need to reorganize our communities like it was before when we had people moving to households in our villages and doing health checks; to ensure clean toilets, clearing stagnant water, immunisation, sanitation”.
Dr Diana said In our churches, mosques, conferences, political and social events and parties, I wish to see all people talking, and talking about disease prevention and health promotion because health touches us all. It would be a contribution, a service, a patriotic act to your country.
Government of Uganda and Ugandans (privately) spend alot of money treating and managing diseases (75% of these being preventable). This money can be saved if we sharpened our communication strategies to increase awareness to the masses for behavioral change, healthy practices and lifestyles.
The conference is very timely given that this FY 19/20, Ministry of Health directed Local Governments to commit atleast 20% of total Primary Health Care funds to initiatives around health promotion and disease prevention.
Special thanks to all our partners that have supported this room for discussion and the organizing committee for this great success.
