The Ministry of Public Service has succeeded in securing Shs 150 billion to increase teacher’s salaries across the country.
Appearing before parliament’s Committee on Education and Sports on Tuesday, Minister for Public Service, Hon Wilson Muruli Mukasa said his ministry was due to meet with members of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) on September 6th.
“The meeting with teachers and UNATU is to deliberate on ways to effect salary enhancement which the unions have been demanding,” said Hon Muruli Mukasa.
The minister added that the teachers through their umbrella body UNATU had threatened industrial action if government failed to follow through on its promise.

During the meeting, the minister disclosed that an inter ministerial committee had recommended a 12% budget cut across all ministries, Departments and Agencies to raise funds for salary enhancements in the education sector.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Human Resource in the Ministry of Education and Sports Jane Mwesiga informed the committee that the biggest problem facing the ministry was imbalance in the teacher student ratio and that some teachers were forging appointment, deployment and transfer letters.
