MPs reject removal of death penalty – 200 inmates are on death row

Prisons boss Dr Johnson Byabashaijja has revealed that there are over 200 inmates on death role at Luzira Prison. During his tour of prison farms in Northern a Uganda, Dr Johnson commented that these inmates are waiting for disposal of their appeals.

The current law doesn’t provide mandate for death penalty unless granted by the presiding judge. Since 1990, Uganda has not put any inmate on death row. In their previous sitting, MPs rested the removal of death penalty claiming that it will increase on crime.

Uganda, in its persuit to remove death penalty, a small section of MPs suggested that the death penalty should be converted into life imprisonment.
