Police in Mbarara is holding seven phone technicians in fixing phones suspected to have stolen over 200 phones in Mbarara town.
Rwizi region Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said because of alarming cases of kidnaps, Murder and aggravated robbery in the country police and its sister security agencies are carrying out different operations to curb down crime in the country.
‘’As you know we have had alarming cases of kidnaps, murder, aggravated robbery, and most of its armed robbery so it is from that basis that we want to curb down crime not only in Mbarara but rather the whole country.’’ Mr Kasasira said
Mr Kasasira said the arrested seven suspects were found with over 200 stolen phones, un specified number of iPads, 5 laptops, 3 monitors, and un specified number of DVD players and they were arrested from High street, Markangsingh street and One-week studio in Mbarara town.
‘’Police and its sister forces have been carrying out operations for the last two weeks and we were able to arrest seven technicians in fixing phones. They were arrested from Mbarara town along the Mbarara high streat,Markarnsigh street and One week Studio with stolen phones, Laptops, DVD players, and many other electronics.’’ Mr Kasasira said
He said the suspects will be charged of being found in possession of suspected stolen property.
Mr Kasasira said police is working under the orders of Inspector General of Police to ensure crime is curbed down in Mbarara and the rest of the country.
‘’Police and its sister forces with the guidance from the IGP and bosses of sister forces come out to root out these crimes at every level because it is not only being done here in Mbarara but in all these other districts. The first operation was carried out in Ntungamo where we were able to arrest six armed robbers and recovered two guns. These operations are going to keep on and the fact that we are heading to festivities we are going to intensify them the more both on the roads and then home security through sensitization and then our covert operations.’’ Mr Kasasira said
According to Resident district Commissioner Lt. Col James Mwesigye since the murder of Mbarara university of Science and Technology (MUST) student, Police with its sister forces started an operation dubbed ‘’Fagiya Ukyafu’’ to clean up the increasing crime in the district.
‘’The operation that we are carrying out is code named Fagiya Ukyafu meaning fight all the crime in Mbarara because the people of Mbarara have been suffering with thieves, you can see that they have been stealing phones, cows to the extent of killing people because recently they killed a student of MUST and some of the killers are now ready with police so this operation is going to continue until Mbarara is clean.’’ Mr Mweisgye said
Rt Lt. Col Mwesigye said the 2018 Crime report indicated that Mbarara district was the second in the whole country in crime, the habit that must be controlled to ensure safety of people and their property.
‘’When you saw the report of 2018 Mbarara was number two in the whole country in crime and this is what we are fighting now so that all criminals can be brought to book.’’ Mr Mwesigye said
Mr Mweisgye said criminal elements are no longer having space in Mbarara as security operatives are doing their level best stop crime in the area.
‘’Whenever the public get anything let them report all these wrong doers and the wrong doers should also stop committing crime because there is no room for crime now in Mbarara.’’ Mr Mwesigye said
