The State minister for local government Jenipher Namuyangu has tasked the contractors of Kasese Municipality main market to immediately restructure the market plan to suit modern standards and capacity for the clients and traders.

“Create rooms for a banking mall where one can withdraw money or bank within the market for security reasons, put more restaurants and cooking places to increase jobs for those cooking, a clinic in case one falls sick can get immediate treatment without getting back home and add more drainage places so that water can be tapped on one big tank”, she said.

She made the instructions during his official tour to the under construction Kasese main market on October 2019 which is supposed to be officially handed over to traders in February 2020.

Hon Namuyangu stressed that the country is changing in many ways where people no longer need to walk long distances looking for money and hospitals yet the engineer can put these necessary need to save time of client who need things in time.

She assured traders that those who were in the market earlier will be given the first priority to avoid conflicts since many had already secured space before being shifted.

She urged the Kasese Municipality authorities to put order on those who feel would operate from outside saying they would be cheating those who pay rent inside the market.

The Kasese municipality mayor Goddfrey Kabbyanga however told the minister that the market under construction is too small to cater for the available traders. He urged the local government to allocate at least Shs 1 billion to improve Kisanga market so that those who would not find space in the market to join Kasanga B Mawa market since the place will be created.

He explained that the available space in the new market will cater for only 846 traders and currently those in the market are about 1200 traders . This shows that about 400 traders will have nowhere to operate from.

Gabriel Fataki the site engineer FANCON promised to implement what the minister advised on noting that the proposed changes will not affect the plans in anyway because the company had saved the contingency funds to cater for such problems.

Kasese main market is one of those to be built in one year under government programs and its completion is estimated to a turn of 14 billion shilling. Other major municiplaities that have benefited include Jinja, Maska, Kampala and Mbarara among others.
