COVID-19 pandemic has strained countries through out pocket payment on medicines, buying test kits, staff costs and other budgets but India as a friend of Uganda over the years has come in handy.

Hon Dr Moriku Joyce and Dr Diana Atwine, State Minister and Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health respectively received the medicine from the Indian Government.

“In support of the COVID-19 response, the Indian government supported Uganda with an assortment of drugs worth USD 248,000. This was received and the medicines will be stocked at the various Government health facilities in the country to boost management of COVID-19 and other diseases”.

Uganda Government through National Medical Stores is mandated to stock medicines that contribute to improving the life of many people in ending any pain.

However, Africa produces less medicine than it needs. The problem has been compounded with coronavirus pandemic that has put alot of pressure on governments.

The  Government of the Republic of Uganda today officially received a  Donation  of  57 Varieties  of Medicine worth 1.6million USD from the Government of the Republic of India. The ceremony took place at the National Medical Stores (NMS) Entebbe.

Minister of Health,  Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth ACHIENG received  the Medicines  on behalf of the Republic of Uganda from H.E. Shri Ravi SHANKAR, the Indian High Commissioner to Uganda on behalf of the Republic of India.

This was made possible  through the efforts and engagements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Government of the Republic of India. Speaking on behalf of the Ministry,  Amb. Alfred Nnam highlighted that this  donation is to be followed by the Commissioning of the Cancer Radio Therapy Machine which also was donated by Government of India following the official visit of Prime Minister  H.E Shri Narendra Modi which took place in July 2018.

Conveying a message of gratitude the Minister, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth ACHIENG, commended the Government of India for supporting Government of Uganda noting that this donation of Medicines is a manifestation of the excellent cordial relations that exist between both countries emphasizing that this will significantly benefit the people of Uganda in improving their health conditions.

The Indian High Commissioner to Uganda reiterated the commitment of the Government of India as a development partner supporting Uganda’s emphasis and initiatives  on local manufacturing of pharmaceutical products.
