High Court will next week hear Dr Stella Nyanzi’s appeal in the case of cyber harassment in which she was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in jail in August.
The appeal due to be heard on the 25th of this month (September) will be presided over by Lady Justice Flavia Anglin Senoga.
According to a notice from the deputy registrar criminal division, Mary Ikit, the appeal is fixed for mention on September 25 2019.
On the same date, the court will also hear the state’s appeal against Nyanzi’s acquittal in the case of offensive communication.
Nyanzi argues that her sentence of 18 months for cyber harassment is illegal and disproportionate.
Additionally, Nyanzi’ s lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde will argue that the lower court erred and entertained a case against his client yet it had no jurisdiction.
On August 2, 2019, the Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu sentenced Nyanzi to 18 months in prison after finding her guilty of cyber harassment contrary to sections 24 (1) and 2 (a) of the Computer Misuse Act, 2011.
