Kenya has been boxed in a corner after Tanzania stopped 14 flights per week by Kenya Airways. Hon James Macharia ,Transport Cabinet Minister says they have held virtual meeting with Tanzania to resolve the impasse.
Kenya lost 53 people in the last three days a number that has forced authorities be tough on nationals entering Kenya. Passengers from 19 countries will not be required to undergo 14 days of quarantine when arrive in the country.
Tanzania was missing on the list for reasons the Kenyan authorities can explain but most people think their refusal to publish Covid-19 infections has disadvantaged the country.
The Director General of Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, Hamza Johari said the 14 flights were cancelled as a retaliation and the ban remains until further notice.
In less than 24 hours, Kenya has been asked to announce that Tanzanian nationals will not be quarantined when they fly to Nairobi. After announcing Tanzania will decide on when to lift the ban.
The 19 countries are Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia,Namibia, Morocco,China,South Korea,Japan,Canada,Switzerland,United Kingdom, France, Germany,Qatar,United Arab Emirates ,Italy and United States.
While East Africa awaits Tanzania’s action in lifting ban, will Uganda allow Tanzania Nationals when it opens its airspace. Currently Uganda does not allow truck drivers who test positive for coronavirus.
Are we going to see the East African Community disintegrate because of coronavirus or the leaders will find a middle ground? Can Tanzania bully the others countries to accept its nationals without being quarantined?
Observers say Tanzania needs to start testing its people so that its at par with other countries.
