Corona Virus Update: Uganda’s High Risk Borders Under Surveillance, Parliament Assured On Oraba and Other Borders Being Monitored For Risk Movement

The Ministry of Health Surveillance team has assured Ugandans that not every border is being manned by its staff because they deploy according to high risk movement of disease or people.
Dr Allan Muruta, Commissioner In Charge of Health Services, disease surveillance and Epidemiology said thiS after parliament raised the issue of Oraba border in Arua district for not being manned by health officials.

“I have told MPs that during my visit to Arua, last Friday, residents told me that the Oraba border point wasn’t being manned by any staff from from the Health Ministry. In the light of the Coronavirus that causing chaos across the globe, its imperative that the Ministry ups its game”.
Dr Allan Muruta said Uganda government is using technical Risk Analysis to determine how to deploy its resources both human and financial.
“But we shall continue to expand our presence as the risk of disease moves to any country near our borders. Currently Entebbe Airport, Busia, Malaba, Chanika and Egeru are all manned by Uganda’s Health Workers”.
Earlier, Hon Dr Jane Ruth Aceng updated on Uganda’s enhanced measures to prevent importation of Novel Coronavirus Disease COVID-19.
Uganda has no confirmed case of COVID-19 as of 11th March 2020. A total of 1,632 travelers including Ugandans and others travelling back home have been identified as high risk and identified for purposes of follow up.
Of these 1,071 are Chinese, 244 Ugandans, 43 are Italians, 34 from South Korea and 484 are other Nationals. A total of 986 travelers are under self-quarantine of which 606 have completed the mandatory 14 days of self quarantine.
The Ministry of Health noted that travelers from 16 countries including United States of America will be subjected to self quarantine for 14 days upon arrival to Uganda.

“I call upon all Ugandans to join in the fight against Coronavirus even before it gets here. Avail yourself for examination at the airport if you are inbound from any of the countries where Coronavirus has been recorded”.
World Health Organisation Boss, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has announced that Coronavirus has been characterized as pandemic.
” In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of COVID-19 cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries climb even higher.
WHO has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and we are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction”.
