The upgrade of Itia Health Center II to a health Center III has begun with the construction of a modern maternity ward to bring maternal health services closure to the people in Katrini Sub-County, Terego district.
The health unit’s location is also strategic because it does not only serve the people of Katrini sub county in Terego district alone but also those from Aroi parish in Alikua sub county and Kijomoro sub county in Maracha district where government health units are far.
Adnan Dramadri, the site engineer for the project awarded to Yumbe based SHWA traders’ enterprises limited, said that due to fund limitation, they were given a contract to fist do the slab in a period of one month starting May 2025.
Other phases of the work would be done in the next financial Year when the local government expects to receive more funds from the central government transfers.

“In the design the facility under construction will have waiting area, reception, dispensing room, medicine store, counselling room, treatment room, diagnosis and EPI rooms when complete although the current contract is remaining at slab level,” Dramadri explained.
The project has employed 19 locals to fetch water over long distance, cooks, mansion men and other casual laborers.

The health unit management committee chairperson, Henry Wadribo is delighted about the new development at the facility, accepting it as a big relieve for people.
“It has been difficult for patients here because there is no waiting area, they stand in sun shine when the benches under the veranda are all occupied but run to shelter themselves in the staff quarters or under shops in Itia trading center during rains,” disclosed Wadribo.
He added: “We really appreciate the government for allocation of this project, I hope it will attract more funds and projects so that the health centre is elevated to save people in the catchment areas within Katrini sub county, Maracha district, especially in Alikua and Kijomoro sub counties,” Wadribo stated.

Yophart Asiku, former LC1 chairperson of Itia village when the health unit that begun as a leprosy diagnosis Centre in 1962 was constructed as a health Centre II in 2005, stated that he is delighted to see that government is continuously committed to improve the facility.
“I am optimistic that expansion of structures here will bring change, our midwife was transferred to Yinga health centre due to lack of maternity ward, women here are suffering to trek long distances to Oriajini hospital, Wandi and Chilio health Centre III in Terego district and A’bia health Centre in Maracha district for labor,” Asiku remarked.
Scovia Likico from Itia village in Olea parish noted that they will be grateful if the laying of the slab is followed by complete construction of a maternity ward to end suffering of expectant mothers during labour.

“We get all the antenatal and postnatal services here except during labor especially at night when boda-bodas in Itia trading Centre have gone back to their homes and fear to offer transport due insecurity cause by the youths on the way, this has led to home deliveries with its complications endangering lives of both the mothers and their babies,” Likico stressed.
Lario Anguyo LC1 chairman of Olodriku village says that upgrading of Itia health Centre will materialize in improvement of services that helped the communities to improve on health seeking behaviors.
